CANDLES
Avoid: paraffin, lead, benzene, acrolein, toluene, artificial colors and scents, VOCs, and formaldehyde.
Look for: Made in the USA or Canada; beeswax, natural soy, or vegetable-based wax (beeswax is ideal); 100% unbleached cotton wicks; unscented or only scented with pure essential oils; uncolored or only colored with non-toxic vegetable-based dyes.
Some candles are specifically designed to be safe to use around pets. Check out this guide to pet-safe candles and this guide to using essential oils with pets. Here are some pet-safe recommendations:
Wild Beautiful Free (10% of profits go toward lion, elephant, and gorilla conservation)
Aire Candle Co (as pure as a candle comes—only two ingredients: beeswax and essential oils)
ESSENTIAL OILS AND AIR FRESHENERS
Avoid: VOCs like acetone, ethanol, pinene, acetate, naphthalene, formaldehyde, phthalates, and 1,4-Dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB)
Not all essential oils are safe to use around pets. Check out this guide to using essential oils with pets.
* Scent Fill (the only 100% natural plug-in air freshener. Lavender and Lavender Vanilla are two pet-safe options)
